Follow the highway east from Melbourne and you'll find yourself in the Yarra Ranges, a mountainous creative mecca where musicians jam until they pass out. This is beer and wine country, a place where goannas roam free, kookaburras hunt for tiger snakes, and the locals belt paddock bombs around the yard until the motor dies - unless you jam the carburetor open with a stick.
But forget the glossy tourist brochure.
It was here, within a rusted tin-shed, that guitarist Ash King and drummer Jeremy Berg first jammed and the seed of what would become Smoke Stack Rhino was born.
Fast forward a few years and add in funk-master Shane Andison on the bass, and the boys have toured around Australia, played over 20 festivals, and shared the stage with the likes of G Flip, Harts, 19-Twenty, Jackson Firebird and more. After recently becoming a trio, the band locked itself away and channeled their inner “Yarra Ranges”, taking influence from psych-rock and roots artists, to create a new sound that will set the standard for lovers of the late-night riff and groove...
